Matt genuinely enjoys helping his clients effectively respond to industry challenges - so they can focus on growing their business.
As the leader of the firm’s Credit Union Group, Matt represents credit union clients exclusively, in Ohio and across the U.S., on a broad spectrum of legal and regulatory issues. Acting as general counsel, he advises on labor and employment, trust and estate, and litigation and title dispute matters. He also performs regular transactional work, including contract review and negotiation, and counsels on commercial paper and check issues and other collection matters. The breadth and depth of his practice has expanded in direct response to the varied needs of his credit union clients, and their reliance on him as a trusted advisor.
Matt works closely with everyone from boards of directors, to vice presidents and CEO’s, to collections staff. They look to him to ensure best practices are aligned to industry standards, as the regulatory environment continues to evolve. Matt understands that every decision must be focused on upholding the safety and soundness of their members, as member satisfaction is their top priority.
Prior to joining Weltman, Matt worked for the Ohio Department of Commerce, Division of Financial Institutions, where he played a key role in assisting financial institutions abide by industry rules and regulations. Today, he is a frequent presenter and trainer on many of the key issues impacting credit unions, including topics such as fraud policy and prevention, consumer collection strategies, the Bank Secrecy Act, and director and officer liability training.
Matt likes to unwind by spending his free time outdoors – whether it be hiking one of the many trails in the Northeast Ohio area, or soaking up the sun on a boat on one of the areas many lakes. He travels nationally and internationally often, and is particularly keen on the Caribbean.
