Empowering the Next Generation: Weltman Joins AMTA National Championship

This past weekend, Weltman Attorneys Denise Leskovec and Jenna Rosen had the unique opportunity to serve as judges during the preliminary rounds of the American Mock Trial Association (AMTA) National Championship Tournament, held in Cleveland Ohio. Now, they’re sharing their experience with us!

The championship, which brought together some of the top undergraduate mock trial teams from across the country, was a showcase of exceptional talent, dedication, and passion for the law. Over the course of three days, volunteers (including attorneys, judges, and law students) were asked to donate their time for one of four 4-hour trial sessions. These volunteers served as presiding and scoring judges, observing students as they brought fictional civil cases to life in real courtroom-style settings.

Each mock trial round featured teams portraying both the plaintiff and defense sides of the case, with students taking on the roles of attorneys and witnesses. The judges were tasked with evaluating students not only on the merits of their legal arguments but also on courtroom decorum, witness portrayal, and overall advocacy skills.

Both Denise and Jenna were struck by the professionalism and preparedness of the student competitors. “It was incredible to see such poised and articulate students delivering powerful opening statements, handling objections with confidence, and cross-examining witnesses like seasoned litigators,” said Jenna. Beyond scoring the performances, the judges also provided feedback to help the students grow in their advocacy.

Our team expressed gratitude to the AMTA organizers for facilitating such an impactful event and encouraged others in the legal field to consider volunteering in the future. “Spending a few hours with these students reminded me of why I went into law in the first place,” said Denise. “Their passion is contagious.”

Events like these not only challenge students to sharpen their legal minds but also offer the legal community a chance to support, mentor, and be inspired by the next generation of advocates.
