Reflecting on the CrossState Compliance Credit Union Association Conference

Attorney Matt Pomy and shareholder Matt Urban recently attended the 2024 CrossState Compliance Conference in Harrisburg, PA. Now, they’re sharing their top takeaways!

Attending the conference was a great experience, as it always is when the credit union community gets together. The event brought together a diverse group of attorneys, NCUA examiners, and industry experts, all focused on the critical issues facing compliance professionals today.

Conference Goals and Activities

The conference aimed to equip credit union professionals with the knowledge and tools needed to navigate the complex landscape of compliance. With a packed schedule of presentations and discussions, the event provided a deep dive into the hottest topics in the industry. The day's agenda was curated to address both current challenges and emerging trends, ensuring that attendees left with actionable insights to apply in their roles.

Highlights from the Speaking Sessions

The lineup of speakers covered a wide range of topics essential for compliance in the credit union sector:
  • Serving Non-US Citizens: This session explored how credit unions can inclusively serve non-citizen members while navigating the legal and regulatory requirements. It highlighted best practices and innovative strategies to support this growing member segment.
  • Credit Union Marketing Compliance: Compliance in marketing is always a hot topic, and this session delved into the nuances of crafting compliant marketing strategies. Attendees learned about the latest regulations and how to effectively communicate with members without crossing legal boundaries and pitfalls of potentially misleading advertisements.
  • NCUA Supervisory and Examination Priorities: Understanding the National Credit Union Administration's focus areas is crucial for preparing for supervisory reviews. This presentation provided a comprehensive overview of the NCUA's current priorities, helping credit unions stay ahead of potential compliance issues.
  • Payment Fraud: As payment systems evolve, so do the tactics of fraudsters. This talk covered the latest trends in payment fraud and offered practical advice on safeguarding member accounts from these threats.
  • Future of Compliance: Looking ahead, this session examined the evolving landscape of compliance, from technological advancements to regulatory changes. It was a forward-thinking discussion on what credit unions need to prepare for in the coming years.

Our Firm’s Contribution: Decedent Accounts Q&A

Weltman had the honor of hosting a highly interactive Q&A session focused on decedent accounts in Pennsylvania and New Jersey along with attorney Michael Dupont. This session was a highlight for us as it allowed for discussions and exchange of best practices when handling accounts after a member's death. The engagement from attendees was electric, with many sharing their experiences and seeking advice on navigating the complex regulations surrounding decedent accounts.
